Chapter 66
Chapter 66: The Twin Stars of the Intelligence Group
The newcomer was not friendly! Lin Mo furrowed his brows.
As a child living on the streets, he had fought tooth and nail for food, and he hated being disturbed while eating.
Lin Mo, filled with annoyance, looked up, only to be dazzled by the sight before him.
A female soldier stood aggressively next to his dining table, her perfectly fitted military uniform harmoniously blending the softness of youth with the vigor of a soldier, enhancing her captivating appearance rather than clashing with it.
Her beautiful eyes sparkled like black pearls in liquid mercury, glaring at him as if she had come to pick a fight.
Judging by her shoulder insignia, she seemed to be a captain, two ranks above him. What did it matter? One was Army, and the other was Air Force; they were in completely different systems.
They locked eyes silently for a few seconds, but Lin Mo had no interest in playing a staring game. He couldn’t recall when he had offended this beauty; it had to be a case of mistaken identity. With over 1.4 billion people in China, it’s likely to happen.
Lin Mo redirected his focus back to his plate, seeing no need to engage in small talk. In his past experiences in different realms, Dragon Knights never lowered themselves to the level of trying to flirt with women; a single glance was all it took for young ladies and noblewomen to throw themselves at him.
With everything so vast, the most important thing was to eat.
Lin Mo picked up a piece of steak, ignoring the girl glaring at him, and continued to chew happily.
Fortunately, it was well past meal time, and there weren’t many people dining in the cafeteria; otherwise, several gossip enthusiasts would have already crowded around, speculating about his relationship with this girl.
“Hey! You mute!” The military boot on the edge of the table could no longer endure his silence and suddenly kicked hard, trying to flip the table over.
Creeeak… The table’s legs screeched against the terrazzo floor, moving just an inch before stopping.
On the other side of the table, a hand firmly held it down, countering the immense force of the boot, but the owner of that hand was joyfully munching away.
“You!” The female captain, ready to send the table flying, discovered that her anger had been abruptly halted. She had never encountered anyone so formidable before, and immediate rage boiled in her, prompting her to fiercely swipe her foot across the table.
If Lin Mo did not take action, the plate would undoubtedly be sent tumbling off the table.
So, Lin Mo moved.
The female captain, ready to launch her assault, had no idea that the still and quiet Lin Mo would retaliate with a powerful counter that was impossible to resist.
Just as her boot was about to hit the plate, she suddenly felt someone gripping her ankle, squeezing tightly. A wave of pain shot through her foot, almost like being pinched by an iron claw. With immense force, she instantly lost her balance, feeling the world spin as she was effortlessly yanked by her collar and slammed toward the ground.
The enemies of a Dragon Knight often included aerial knights, giant beasts, or even Giant Dragons. The straightforward, swift, and merciless strikes were unique to Dragon Knights, just like Lin Mo’s close-combat skills.
Many strong warriors had perished at the hands of women; in the dictionary of a Dragon Knight, there was never any gentleness. Interrupting a pleasant meal was an unforgivable sin for Lin Mo.
“Captain Lin! Please stop!”
A clear, melodious voice suddenly rang out.
Just as Lin Mo was about to slam the provocatively aggressive female captain—who was trying to swipe his food—down onto the terrazzo floor, the voice interrupted her.
The moment the voice sounded, Lin Mo’s movements froze, although he possessed great strength, he managed to control himself perfectly.
With one hand gripping the female captain’s ankle and the other holding her collar, it was hard to imagine such a lovely girl in such a vulnerable position in this big man’s grasp—this all happened in the blink of an eye.
“Ah!”
The female captain finally let out a delayed cry, her delicate face only inches above the ground, the cold terrazzo floor fogging slightly from her warm breath. A strand of her hair playfully brushed the ground, touching the polished stone grains.
Lin Mo looked up and saw a face identical to the one he was holding—a fellow captain. For a moment, he thought he had mistakenly grabbed the wrong person, and he couldn’t help but check again before realizing they were twins, and both were captains.
“I’m very sorry, Captain Lin! I apologize for my sister’s impulsiveness! I’m truly sorry.” A calm voice spoke as the twin female captain approached step by step. Lin Mo sensed something unusual; beneath her seemingly calm gaze lay countless secrets.
“Who are you two?” The corners of Lin Mo’s mouth lifted slightly, yet unexpectedly, his grip loosened.
Smack! “Ouch!”
The female captain found herself making an ungraceful landing on the ground.
Her soft, fragrant body collided with the hard, cold terrazzo floor, causing onlookers to wince.
“You…” The twin sister approached, her tone stiff; she never expected Lin Mo to show no mercy. However, she quickly regained her composure and said, “We are from the Intelligence Group. I am Lieutenant Li Muxin, and this is my sister, Li Muling. The intelligence error during this operation is our responsibility, and we will face the consequences.”
“Sister, why are we being polite? Let’s just beat him up together!” The fallen female captain sprang back up, stepping back two or three paces like a cat poised for a fight.
Sister Li Muxin frowned slightly and told her impulsive sister, “Step aside, Muling. Do you know the consequences of acting impulsively? You will go back and take three days of confinement and write a letter of guarantee promising not to make this mistake again!”
“Are we just going to let him off like this? Chief Xie got scolded terribly by that scoundrel Pan! The whole squad knows about it. If anyone should scold him, it should be the First Squad! That guy Lin didn’t get in trouble at all while Pan has no right to provoke us. Where is the dignity of our group going?” The twin sister grit her teeth in indignation, sounding like an angry little kitten. Clearly, she felt wronged by Lin Mo. “Wait until we deal with that Pan guy…”
Smack! Suddenly, her sister slapped her across the face, cutting off her words.
Holding her cheek, the younger sister’s eyes filled with tears as she called out, “Sister!”
Tears streamed down her face.
Li Muxin retracted her hand. The slap had some weight, but it was the first time she had ever hit her sister, and a sense of guilt arose in her heart. This sister had always been obedient and capable. Perhaps she had been too strict and hadn’t allowed her to experience the trials of life, leading her to act impulsively.
“If there’s a problem, you need to take responsibility. Find a way to fix the loopholes and prevent this from happening again. Acting rashly like this puts your missions at risk. If you can’t handle it, then go home!” Li Muxin sternly chastised her sister in front of others.
“Go back right now, serve a week of confinement, and write me a reflection report. Immediately, turn around! March! One, two, one…”
Fearing her sister would cause further trouble, Li Muxin hurriedly ordered her away.
“Chief Xie? Old Pan? Scold? With those key phrases in mind, Lin Mo quickly pieced together the situation. While he hadn’t heard Old Pan’s exact insults towards Chief Xie, judging by the twins’ reactions, those insults must have been sharp.
To Li Muling, the sister’s words were like an imperial edict. Reluctantly, she turned and left, but her voice could still be heard from the cafeteria door, “If you want to seek revenge, come find us sisters. I am still Li Muling! Just you wait!”
“Ten days!” Li Muxin scoffed loudly, only to hear a cry from outside, “Sister, I hate you so much!”
In the blink of an eye, the confinement went from three days to seven; from seven days to ten. Li Muling had met her match as she followed orders without daring to protest.
Lin Mo, however, found it hard to understand the drama between the twins. The younger sister was impulsive and action-oriented, while the older sister was calm and thoughtful; it was hard to believe they were twins with such vast differences.
“I’m fine; it was just good luck! However, knowing each other and understanding the enemy is what ensures victory. Your work in the Intelligence Group directly relates to the survival of us frontline fighters. This time was lucky, but who knows about next time?” Lin Mo recalled the battle from earlier that morning, feeling a hint of fear, but still showing some consideration for the older twin.
“I’m truly sorry. The target was very cunning and might have used special methods to evade our intelligence personnel and informants. However, I have already requested to personally take charge of this intelligence error case to give the First Squad and your Aircrew Group an explanation,” Li Muxin stated confidently, her eyes reflecting a hint of determination.
That night, whether in the base or on task, the elite members of the Intelligence Group all approached Chief Xie, vowing to uncover the truth behind the intelligence blunder. Li Muxin believed that she would ultimately restore the Intelligence Group’s lost face.
Lin Mo didn’t particularly understand how the Intelligence Group operated, but since they had dealt with the minor issue, bringing forth a larger resolution was ideal. He shrugged his shoulders, “Alright! I believe you! Just don’t let it happen again!”
With her sister Li Muling facing a ten-day confinement and having to write a reflection, Lin Mo found no reason to pursue it further. However, the next time, it wouldn’t be so easy to settle.
“Thank you!” Li Muxin sighed in relief and saluted Lin Mo as a gesture of gratitude.
Outside the confinement room, Li Muxin spotted her younger sister obediently writing her reflection in the small dark room.
Li Muling took her sister’s words seriously and executed them without question.
“Sister!” Upon hearing footsteps outside, Li Muling looked up in surprise and quickly asked, “That guy Lin didn’t do anything to you, did he?”
“Muling, you need to stop being so impulsive. Do you know how dangerous that was?” Lin Mo had given Li Muxin a very terrifying feeling. The ruthlessness he displayed when overpowering her sister sent chills down her spine.
He didn’t resemble a fresh recruit who had recently joined the army; rather, he seemed like a seasoned veteran who had fought in countless battles.
“He is strong!” Li Muxin emphasized, seeing her sister still not grasping the situation.
“What? Just him?” Li Muling’s eyes widened in disbelief, astonished that her sister praised that pilot. Yet, she knew her sister had a sharp eye for people.
Li Muling had almost suffered a severe setback at Lin Mo’s hands, and her heart raced as the memory flooded back. His skills were utterly unimaginable. Not only was he a pilot but also skilled in close-quarters combat, which was surprising.
