Has the Demon King Paid Taxes Today?

Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Sorry, Miss, I Did Not Mean to Disturb You

It turns out that when groups with different opinions come together, it becomes very noisy.

Even though both the Sapphire Dragon and the Dark Elf are naturally more restrained races, it was clear that neither of the two could hide their bitterness at this moment.

Even Felix, who loved money very much, showed a respectable attitude when he saw Safir’s mountain of gold, as if wealth could not corrupt him.

"Is this all your tricks?" The Dark Elf hoped Lin Lin had other wicked methods, hoping they could truly take Safir’s life, "Do you have a backup plan?"

Lin Lin answered honestly, "Not at all."

Felix, "Tsk."

Why are you making that sound? You are colleagues on the same side!

Looking back now, it was really nice that the two of them could get along during the meeting, showing respect for the Demon King.

"Compared to this," Lin Lin looked at Felix, "aren’t you the least bit curious why I ambushed him?"

"What’s so strange about it?" Felix shrugged, while the Dark Elf shot a harsh look at the Dragon race. "Safir gets ambushed three or four times every month; he’s just very annoying."

Speaking hurtful words without any guilt!

The annoying Dragon race sneered, "Compared to the Dark Elf, the Dragon race is a respected and admired race, not a rat in the gutter."

…Ah, Lin Lin quietly covered her ears, not wanting to join this battle of insults.

She wanted to sleep; she had walked so much today and was really tired.

"You all keep arguing, good night."

Lin Lin lay straight in the cat bed, wrapped in her little blanket.

The two opposing people paused for a moment, but the tension in the air did not ease.

The dragon race was very territorial. He noticed the young elf glancing at Lin Lin several times after she lay down, and Felix didn’t seem to want Lin Lin to stay here.

Safir calmly spoke, "Do you want to rest here too?"

Felix shivered at the thought he suggested, getting goosebumps all over, and quickly left.

–

Lin Lin drowsily woke up and opened her eyes to see a Dark Elf in a cloak in front of her.

Felix often seemed a bit droopy during the day. When he saw Lin Lin wake up, he sighed with relief, "No wonder you didn’t open the door when I called you last time; you sleep until this time."

Lin Lin silently turned over, tucked her head into the blanket, and rolled to the other side of the cat bed.

Felix, "…Don’t pretend you can’t see me."

Lin Lin yawned as she ate breakfast.

Felix sat next to her with a plate of mixed vegetable salad.

There were no mushrooms, which Dark Elves usually eat, in this forest, so Felix reluctantly ate the salad with a bit of indifference.

Unlike most picky officials in the Demon King Castle, Dark Elves are the kind of people who won’t waste food even if they don’t feel like eating. He finished the salad on his plate completely, his cheeks full.

Lin Lin couldn’t help but admire him, as if praising a small child, "That’s such a good habit."

"He just doesn’t let any food that can go into his mouth go to waste," the Dragon from the door behind Lin Lin entered the stone hall. "The Lizardfolk told me about part of your hot spring plan."

Whenever Lin Lin saw Safir recently, she felt a bit nervous, like meeting a mentor.

"I have some ideas," Lin Lin nodded and handed her notebook to Safir.

Besides the few keywords from yesterday, Lin Lin also added some details to help with the specific implementation of the hot spring project.

Safir quietly finished reading the notes in Lin Lin’s notebook and then looked up.

They were about to give scores! Lin Lin held her breath.

"I think it’s worth a try," Safir said, "After all, the hot spring is aimed at a large group of people, both humans and Orcs. Your opinion is more valuable than mine, and I will handle the actual implementation."

Even though she didn’t receive a direct response, after thinking about Safir’s tendency to praise people, Lin Lin still saw this evaluation as a good achievement.

Lin Lin’s notebook was taken back, and Felix leaned in to sneak a look at the hot spring plan.

The underground creature, who completely didn’t understand the fun of hot springs and scrubbing, frowned. He wisely chose not to express his dislike in front of Lin Lin.

Safir looked at Felix and asked, "When are you leaving?"

Felix lazily responded while finishing the last bite of salad, "When you die."

Lin Lin noticed that Felix looked like a startled cat when he faced Safir, so he appeared much more lively than usual.

Moreover, he had a feeling that Lin Lin should support his hopes more.

Felix was the youngest among all the officers, and the Demon King once jokingly said that Lin Lin and Felix would have a lot in common.

Ignoring Felix’s curse, Safir was openly serious. He always treated work this way, "The Demon King sent you here because you are close; what is your task?"

Lin Lin looked at Felix with anticipation.

"Alright," the Dark Elf agreed, leaning back in his chair, "I need to buy a batch of medicine in Tocopia."

Felix glanced at Lin Lin; he knew some of the human customs, and he wanted to make a good impression in front of Lin Lin.

Lin Lin asked, "Is it poison?"

Felix looked at Safir in disbelief.

Safir calmly clarified, "It’s not taught by me; she taught herself."

"It’s poison," Felix had to admit, "and recently, the monsters around Demon King Castle have been restless; it feels like things won’t settle down."

"Aren’t all monsters under the Demon King’s control?" Lin Lin asked sincerely.

"Certainly not," Safir answered the question, "just like not all humans are ruled by the king, a significant number of monsters are ‘masterless.’"

"Especially since both the God of Light and the God of Darkness disappeared after that great battle," Felix added, "the Light Race also betrayed the God of Light, disturbing the residents of their own faction."

Just as the creatures on the ground mock those below them as dark beasts, the Light Race is also a derogatory term.

Indeed, this world is still very complicated.

Lin Lin rubbed her head and only asked what she wanted to hear, "So… is the place you went interesting?"

Safir opened his eyes, realizing the question; just as he was about to stop it, Felix had already leaned closer to Lin Lin.

"Of course," the Dark Elf replied, enchanting people as easily as breathing.

The silver eyes gazed sincerely at Lin Lin, and Felix added, "You might even meet a real witch. You are always mistaken for one, don’t you want to see what they are really like?"

Indeed, Lin Lin’s next question was, "Can I go?"

"Of course you can," Felix said with a very willing attitude, "but… your black hair is very special; we need to make a few small changes. Even in Tocopia, witches do not appear openly."

The Dark Elf helped Lin Lin stand up and urged her to leave the stone hall, "We will stay there for a few days. Although we are leaving at night, you need to start preparing now."

Safir had a serious face.

Felix turned to look at Safir, "As for that dragon, let him dig holes alone in the hot springs."

–

Now Lin Lin understood why, the last time she went to Tocopia, Safir had said that the Dark Elf was better at these magical tricks when she mentioned wanting to change her hair color.

Felix first made her drink a bottle of potion, then the Dark Elf covered her eyes and whispered a spell in her ear.

The potion that entered her stomach felt warm, and Lin Lin even suspected that it was bubbling and rolling in her belly.

It had a bitter taste as strong as black coffee, and Lin Lin fought the urge to throw up, feeling the warmth spreading from her stomach throughout her body.

The Dark Elf pulled back the hand that was in front of her eyes and said, "Look at yourself."

Then Lin Lin saw some changes in her reflection in the mirror.

Her pure black hair faded, transforming into a light platinum color, and her deep brown eyes shifted to a dark red; even her delicate and soft face became more three-dimensional and deep.

In short, Lin Lin now looked more like a human mixed with other races.

She seemed to fit better into this world, but she also became more dangerous.

After all, mixed-blood individuals always have special abilities that are difficult for others to see through.

"That’s amazing," Lin Lin said as she touched her face, not feeling any different from before.

Felix tied her hair up in a high ponytail, making her look more like a neat half-human magician, "I just added a layer of illusion to you, but most people can’t see it, unless they have the ‘Eye of Truth’ that can see everything."

Lin Lin asked, "Can I change into other shapes?"

There was a joy like playing with dolls.

"Sorry," the Dark Elf admitted, "usually, there are no other shapes. You will look like this the next time you take the potion."

Alright.

Lin Lin felt a bit disappointed.

"Guess who I am!" Lin Lin exclaimed, holding the magician’s staff given to her by the Dark Elf, wearing a light white robe that wizards usually wear, unable to contain her excitement.

The Dragon race reading nearby looked up; he had already known Lin Lin was coming as she approached. Safir calmly gazed at her, "Congratulations, you don’t look like a witch anymore."

Although she never thought she could trick the Dragon race, the calm manner of the other person truly disappointed Lin Lin.

"Give me the magic wand," Safir said, "You can’t go out with an empty magic wand."

This is also why the Dark Elf agreed to let Lin Lin say goodbye to Safir before she set off.

They all knew what to do.

"Alright," Lin Lin said as she stepped in front of Safir and took a moment to look around the study.

Unlike the Demon King’s lounge, Safir’s study was filled with open books, with so many that they overflowed onto the sofa, coffee table, and floor.

Lin Lin could smell the unique scent of the books.

Safir grasped the staff, and the milky-white staff glowed softly in his hand as the Dragon race filled it with energy.

As a naturally magical creature, a dragon’s power could invade any container that had a different elemental force.

Safir suspected that the Dark Elf had gotten this treasure from his white-skinned comrades because it looked very valuable and was a light-type item that the Dark Elf could not use.

It should have originally been part of Felix’s collection, now taken out for Lin Lin to play with.

"Want to try it now?" Safir asked.

Lin Lin gripped the magic wand again, feeling a gentle warmth flowing through it.

Safir’s eyes landed on Lin Lin’s new face.

He couldn’t see her original appearance, but his Dragon race sensitivity to magic made him aware of a soft energy slowly gathering around Lin Lin’s face.

Although he couldn’t see what Lin Lin originally looked like, he knew she had changed her appearance.

Even though he knew that a small and remote city like Tocopia probably wouldn’t have any very powerful individuals, Safir still felt a hint of worry.

"Don’t let Felix take you to any chaotic places."

Lin Lin held the staff tightly, eagerly watching the white energy flowing slowly inside.

She was a bit annoyed by Safir’s excessive worries, "Oh, I get it."

–

"Miss Mage!"

"Miss Mage!"

"Miss Mage!"

In the noisy tavern, orange-red light shone from above, and the smell of barley beer filled the whole place. Drunk customers slept in the corners, while a cat-girl waitress poured fresh drinks for them. People clapped their hands and rhythmically cheered for the customer at the center of the table.

The applause sounded like the beating of war drums, and Lin Lin looked at the Worgen sitting across from her, raising an eyebrow in challenge.

"I can’t drink anymore, I surrender, I really surrender."

Worgen gagged a little, then grabbed the trash can handed to him by the cat girl and began to vomit heavily.

Lin Lin, standing in the center of the crowd, held up a large beer glass and made an upward palm gesture to the crowd.

Applause and whistling sounds immediately followed.

"Tonight’s winner is Miss Mage—Lin!"

The bar owner hung a gold-plated medal around Lin Lin’s neck amidst the cheers.

The medal felt a bit heavy for Lin Lin, and she awkwardly adjusted its position so it wouldn’t choke her. Suspecting it wasn’t real gold, Lin Lin instinctively took a small bite.

The Dark Elf, feeling right at home, chuckled softly. When an Orc glanced at the medal on Lin Lin’s neck, he casually placed his arm on the backrest of Lin Lin’s chair, showing a hint of protection.

The Dark Elf’s hood was open, and he was looking up at Miss Mage, his chin slightly raised, revealing his dark wood-like profile beneath his silky silver hair.

The Elf’s cold silver eyes glanced toward the peeking Orc.

Everyone knows how fierce and difficult the Dark Elf race is. The Orc immediately shifted his gaze, as if he was just distracted for a moment.

Unlike Lin Lin, the Dark Elf did not drink much; his cup of golden ale had only gone down by one-fifth.

After Lin Lin sat down, Felix leaned close to her ear, avoiding the loud noise around them, "You are really amazing."

The Dark Elf is very good at such compliments.

Of course, this also relates to their race’s characteristic of doing anything to achieve their goals.

Lin Lin’s white cheeks turned slightly red, and she felt a little proud, "I don’t get drunk easily with this kind of drink; in my previous world, I sometimes used this skill for work."

"You must have had a hard time," the cunning Dark Elf immediately put on a sympathetic face.

Lin Lin nodded slowly, "Talking too much only brings tears."

Even though I don’t get drunk, I do feel the need to go to the bathroom.

Lin Lin refused Felix’s company and walked out of the tavern toward the restroom behind it.

The Dark Elf’s hearing was very sharp; she did not want Felix to hear her using the restroom.

She pushed the door open, and the cold evening breeze blew against her face.

Tocopia was a chaotic city, but at midnight, it showed a bit of quietness.

Tonight was a full moon, and the moon in the night sky shone with a soft glow.

After all, she had been drinking; her cheeks felt warm, and Lin Lin took out her ponytail, brushing away the hair that was stuck to her face.

Then she heard the sound of hooves.

It was not running, but a slow, leisurely walking sound.

The armor blocked the moonlight in front of Lin Lin.

Lin Lin looked up.

A knight of humanity.

The smell of wine lingered between her slightly parted lips, and Lin Lin almost thought it was a dream caused by her drunkenness.

On a white stallion, a knight in silver armor slowly took off his helmet.

Few people could look so clean and fresh while wearing armor, as if a god favored him and granted him privileges in body and appearance.

His warm, golden fluffy short hair and clear, distant blue eyes made him so clean that he seemed out of place in the city, like a white dove that had wandered into a mud puddle.

"Sorry, miss, I didn’t mean to disturb you," the young man spoke softly.

Then he lowered his head again to gaze at Lin Lin’s face, slightly puzzled and opening his mouth, "Did you encounter any trouble?"
