The Place Nearest to You
Chapter 13
The next day, when Ando opened the door, a pile of cold medicine fell at her feet.
She froze for a moment, then raised the corner of her mouth and smiled.
Yesterday, she was completely soaked like a drowned rat. With Okita by her side, the seniors didn't dare to come over and ask about her.
This morning, they very tacitly gave her medicine.
But the seniors were worried too much. This little rain was nothing to someone who grew up in the countryside and practiced swordsmanship all year round.
"Sure enough, idiots don't catch colds."
Okita was still leisurely chewing gum with his hands in his trouser pockets.
Ando nodded with a smile. She thought he was just as concerned about her health as the seniors.
After all, he was a person who didn't know how to express his thoughts, so she understood him very well.
Okita was a little scared by her smile, so he pretended not to care and turned to leave.
Ando stretched and looked at the rising sun in the sky. She was in a good mood.
If it was any other time, he wouldn't have gotten up so early.
It wasn't that she thought too much, he was just concerned about her.
She picked up the pile of medicine on the ground and put it in the drawer.
Although she didn't need it now, there might be a senior who caught a cold one day. At that time, she could use it to deal with emergencies.
"Sogo, something happened."
Although Hijikata's voice was low, Ando still heard him.
She ran out of the room alertly and saw Hijikata and Okita walking out of the station side by side.
Shinsengumi usually went to work at around ten in the morning, so it was rare for him to go out so early in the morning.
Ando didn't hesitate and secretly followed them.
A long queue captain and the vice captain were working together, so there must be a big case.
The two of them were mysterious and didn't bring anyone else, so she didn't know what they were doing.
She carefully followed them for a while, but the two of them didn't notice her at all.
Seeing how they were bickering as if there was no one else around, even if she swaggered behind them, they wouldn't notice.
Although they always said "go to hell", the relationship between the two of them was much better than she thought.
With this thought in mind, she arrived at the dance hall.
They entered a bar with familiarity, and she hesitated at the door.
She was only sixteen years old. Without someone to guide her, it was impossible for her to enter.
What are they doing in there?
Was it a meeting with a mafia boss or an undercover agent?
The more she thought about it, the more excited she became.
Just as she was about to rush in, a naked man with brown hair flew out from the entrance. She quickly dodged and hid to the side.
The man was sprawled on the street.
She didn't see the man's face, but she knew who he was.
She covered her face and wanted to leave this place.
It's too embarrassing, Chief Kondo.
"Miss Tea, another bottle!"
She almost could not meet Kondo in the settlement. It turned out that he spent all his time in the bar of the dance hall.
How did Shinsengumi become so powerful with such an unreliable director?
"I'm sorry."
She heard Hijikata's apology.
It was really not easy for the deputy director. On one hand, he had to guard against assassinations by his subordinates. On the other hand, he had to clean up after the director.
No wonder he smoked for so many years. No wonder he had glaucoma.
He must have had more hair before, but now it was quite suitable. She just didn't know if he would become bald in many years.
Ando couldn't help but worry about Hijikata in her heart.
Kondo turned over, exposing his important parts to the air.
His cheeks were red, and his eyes were shining.
Ando couldn't bear to look, so she turned around and hid in the crowd.
Hijikata nonchalantly put his clothes on Kondo and dragged him away in front of everyone.
"Hey, Kondo, you haven't paid yet."
The owner of the lazy voice had messy natural curls. Ando wondered if his hairstyle was congenital or acquired.
Okita took out two bills from a black wallet and handed them to Gintoki. He asked very obediently, "But, is that enough?"
"You're so generous." Gintoki took the bills from his hand and flattered him with starry eyes.
"It's Sogo, but there." Okita calmly corrected him.
Ando felt that the natural curls looked very familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had seen them.
Ando didn't remember who he was until Kagura rushed over and snatched the two bills from Gintoki's hand.
Wasn't he Kagura's unreliable boss who always starved her?
"Silver Chan, you're hungover again. We can't even open the pot at home." Kagura yelled as she grabbed the sleepy Gintoki's collar.
"Three meals a day, a simple but peaceful house has always been prepared for you." Okita's tone was serious, and his face was kind and amiable.
"Masochist, do you want to die?" Kagura picked up her umbrella and pointed it at Okita.
Ando walked out from the crowd and grabbed Kagura's hand that was holding the umbrella. He smiled apologetically, "Kagura, Okita -senpai was just joking."
She had seen Okita and Kagura's destructive power many times. She didn't want to see everything within a hundred meters of this place turn into ruins.
Director Kondo's naked appearance was already embarrassing enough. If he destroyed this place, would their Shinsengumi's image still exist?
No wonder people would rather vote for a street sweeper than any of them …
"For Yumi's sake, I'll spare your life, Arroux." Kagura put away her umbrella.
"Who's Yumi?"
Okita and Gintoki asked at the same time. They didn't know if it was because of chemistry or something else.
"It's me, senpai."
It was fine that Gintoki didn't know her, but why did Okita forget her name as well?
Although she had always called him "Ando", she remembered that she had told him her name when they first met.
"Oh, it's Kayo-chan. Kagura often talks about you. Nice to meet you." Gintoki wiped himself several times and reached out his hand to Ando.
"It's Yumi … Forget it.
Mr. Sakata, Kagura's boss. Nice to meet you. "Ando shook his hand and smiled.
"If you have any problems, remember to come to Yorozuya. I'll give you a 9% discount."
"But I have a lot of requests waiting for you." Okita interrupted.
"Don't worry about Soichiro's requests." Gintoki dragged Kagura away.
Did he remember something unpleasant?
Ando stared in bewilderment at Yin Shi's disappearing figure in a daze.
Okita grabbed her wrist and walked forward. He said casually, "Don't come to this place alone in the future. Do you understand?"
"Kagura, a little girl, lives here." Ando retorted.
"She's not a little girl. She's a mountain gorilla."
"I'm not a little girl either. I'm also a mountain gorilla." Ando said unhappily.
He had never thought of protecting her as a little girl from the beginning, but today he remembered her identity as a "little girl".
She didn't like his attitude towards her. She would rather he treat her as a partner who could fight side by side.
"Then can you, a mountain gorilla, communicate with Kondo -san? Don't always make me and Hijikata come here to find him."
"Huh?"
He accepted the mountain gorilla setting so quickly, and-
You said Director Kondo was a gorilla!
Well, Director Kondo was indeed like a gorilla, but-
"I'm not a mountain gorilla!"
