The Place Nearest to You
Chapter 17
The strange noises in the night didn't disappear after Kondo's assassination team was killed. They still rang out regularly at eleven o 'clock at night.
Usually at this time, there was no one in the yard, and it was time for everyone to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
The wind in the late autumn night was cold and gloomy, completely different from the bone-chilling winter wind.
This kind of coldness made it easy for people to associate it with illusory ghosts.
During the day, the team members shared the ghost novels and horror movies they had read. They used their extraordinary imagination and shivered in fear.
Ando had confidently demonstrated her reasoning, and most of the team members believed her. But no one expected that after the assassins were killed, the strange noises would still continue.
Was there really a ghost?
That was what most of the team members were thinking.
Ando didn't believe it. She opened the door and rushed into the yard.
The moon was hidden in the clouds, the stars were dim, and the whole camp was as dark as ink. She couldn't even see her fingers in front of her.
The crisp sound of wood colliding reverberated in the quiet courtyard. Every sound seemed to be forcefully drilled into one's ears.
In such an atmosphere, the sound carried the fear of ghosts from hell.
Ando still believed that someone was behind this, so she wasn't scared. She pricked up her ears to listen, trying to find the real source of the sound.
But the sound seemed to be coming from all directions, reaching the same destination, which was her ears.
She couldn't tell at all.
She thought about it and decided to do a carpet search.
She spent an hour rummaging through every nook and cranny of the yard. She actually found four small speakers in several inconspicuous places. The strange sound was their masterpiece.
She threw the loudspeaker into the middle of the yard and rather speechlessly called everyone out.
The so-called police who protected the peace of Edo were scared out of their wits by these four little gadgets. They would be laughed at if word got out.
But it didn't matter. Anyway, Shinsengumi's reputation had hit rock bottom.
Okita picked up the speaker and played with it with interest. He fumbled for a long time but couldn't find the switch. This thing was probably a wireless control. If the creator didn't turn it off, the speaker would work tirelessly until the power ran out.
He put the speaker next to Hijikata's ear, and the latter moved aside in disgust.
Hijikata's expression didn't look too good. Obviously, he didn't expect that the thing that had tortured him for so many days was such a thing.
"There are no ghosts in this world."
Ando, she was in a very good mood.
She had always believed that there were no ghosts in this world. Many strange things were arbitrarily attributed to ghosts because the truth was not found.
When the truth appeared in front of everyone, all the previous guesses were a joke.
Hijikata calmly crushed the four speakers as if they were cigarette butts. Then he looked at Ando admiringly and asked, "So tell me, who's behind this?"
Everyone's eyes were fixed on Ando. For the first time, she felt what it felt like to be the center of everyone's attention.
But how would she know who was behind this? She was just an atheist, and she was just a little braver than them when it came to dealing with so-called ghosts.
"Probably …" Ando swallowed her words and said, "I don't know."
There were only two possibilities for someone to be able to secretly hide four speakers in Shinsengumi. One was that the person was extremely skilled, like the "ace" that was killed by Okita last night. The other was that there was a mole in Shinsengumi.
Ando would rather believe that it was the former. She didn't want Shinsengumi to fall into a state of mutual suspicion after just coming out of the fear of ghosts.
If she said these two possibilities, Shinsengumi would definitely be shaken. She couldn't let that happen.
"Let's call it a day. Everyone, go back and rest."
Hijikata looked at her and said to all the team members.
Ando wanted to say something, but she didn't. Although she couldn't say it in front of everyone, she had to tell the vice captain.
If there was a mole in Shinsengumi, it would be a terrible thing.
Everyone went through life and death together, and they trusted each other's backs in the face of danger. But if someone stabbed them in the back …
"Vice captain!"
Ando waited until everyone went back to their rooms before she called out to Hijikata.
"I got it. You can go rest." Hijikata lit a cigarette and took a deep puff.
Under the flickering light, Ando looks at it, but she doesn't move. She doesn't believe that Hikata will be able to escape so easily.
"Sogo, come to my room tonight."
He stopped looking at Ando and called out to Okita.
"Hijikata, you bastard, do you want to be unable to get out of bed tomorrow?"
Okita's tone was light, but there was a hint of slyness in his eyes. Ando blushed as she thought of something bad.
She coughed lightly and turned to walk back to her room.
She was worrying for nothing. If she could think of something, how could the vice captain not think of it?
Standing in his position, perhaps he had considered more things and was more thorough than himself.
It was just a pity that he didn't want her to join him in solving this problem.
She didn't have the strength of Okita's predecessor, so she wasn't trustworthy enough.
She looked back and saw Hijikata shouting angrily with a cigarette in his mouth. Okita still looked relaxed. She didn't know what he said to make Hijikata angry.
