Enkidu
Chapter 7
After the coronation ceremony, Arthur needed to gather all the lords in the country for the proper ceremony.
The country fell into turmoil after the death of the Uther Of Silla, and the problem could not be solved in a short time.
Fortunately, Arthur was indeed talented in managing the country. He could handle many things properly without the advice of the old officials left behind by the Uther Of Silla.
In the chaotic period before the new king ascended the throne, land disputes occurred from time to time. Not only did the nobles exploit the commoners, but the big nobles also oppressed the small nobles. This was the most frequently mentioned problem during the meeting.
It was reasonable to say that as long as all the land was returned, he could win over most of the exploited nobles. However, it was not that simple. There were many high-ranking nobles involved, and Arthur, whose foundation was not yet stable, was not suitable to make bold reforms.
This was an urgent problem that needed to be solved. He had to think of a way.
From a small room at home to a vast and sturdy castle, it seemed that there was no difference. Arthur sat at the stone table, reading rolls of sheepskin scrolls with the light of the oil lamp. Occasionally, when the light was dim, Knights would help him reignite the flame.
"You should rest."
Knights had already rotated the night watch. The king was still in his original position. The sheepskin scrolls were stacked into a small mountain on the left side of the table.
"Let me read for a while more."
It was only the second half of the night. For Arthur, it was still early. He had long been used to a high-intensity life and did not feel tired. Although the strong dragon species would also be tired, Arthur was far from reaching the standard of not being able to hold on.
"You go rest first. I need to stay a little longer. Tell the people behind me that they don't need to change shifts."
This was the king's thoughtfulness.
King Arthur, who was born a commoner, could understand the feelings of others better. Besides, he was extraordinary in martial arts and could protect himself well. There was no need for others to stay up with him.
He heard the sound of Knights quietly leaving the room and closing the door. He was slightly relieved.
Probably because he still recognized his former identity, Arthur was not used to ordering others around. He preferred to stay alone in the study without bothering any subordinates.
The lights flickered with the cold wind outside the window, and finally dimmed into the shape of a small bean.
A hand reached over and lit up the dying flame.
"Why are you back again? You …"
Before he could finish his words, Arthur paused when he saw who it was.
During the day, Enkidu accompanied Arthur to attend the ceremony of the nobles. Because Merlin did not like to meddle in the affairs of the nobles, he disappeared after crowning Arthur. Enkidu was worried that Gozhu would be attacked by other magicians. Even though Arthur said that he could handle it, Enkidu still watched the whole scene in the state of Lingzi.
Therefore, Arthur thought that Enkidu should have gone to rest.
"Can I have a look at these files?"
Enki sat on a chair opposite Arthur and pointed at the sheepskin scroll that Arthur had already finished reading. Perhaps it was for the convenience of Arthur's subordinates.
"Of course."
He was a little surprised that Enkidu did not persuade him to stop working, but Arthur would satisfy his friend's request.
Unlike the Uruk slate, the sheepskin was light and thin, and very convenient to carry around. Enkidu, who was endowed with knowledge of the modern world, could naturally understand the obscure words on it. Most of these came from the Uther Of Silla's period and the monarch's documents. He guessed that his child would use it in the future, so the later the sheepskin scroll, the more detailed the annotations were.
"The previous Uther Of Silla was a qualified monarch."
Enkidu could not help but sigh. Through the documents, he could see the image of a thoughtful and far-sighted king.
"I'm proud to have such a father."
The relationship between father and son was much more complicated than that of ordinary people. Arthur did not have any resentment, but he had thought about the situation when he met that man. Unfortunately, until the Merlin informed him after the death of the Uther Of Silla, Arthur did not have a suitable identity to stand in front of him.
"I believe that you will do better than your father."
Enkidu's tone was as usual, and his praise was as plain as ever. For Arthur, it was much more pleasant than any compliment.
"I hope I can do it."
Although King Arthur was sincerely happy for this sentence, he only slightly relaxed his eyebrows and did not show it.
The two men stayed in the study for the whole night. Occasionally, Arthur would ask Enkidu for some advice on how to govern the country. He had already made up his mind to return the land to its original owners, even if it would be opposed by the great nobles. Compared to the stability of his own position, the unity of the country was more important.
The meeting of the lords lasted for about five days. If it had been in the past, it would have been even longer. The years of war had caused many lords to break away and attach themselves to other countries. Without an heir, the country had lost a lot of its vitality.
During this period, Enkidu and Arthur dealt with state affairs in the study every night until dawn. Almost all the Knights in the castle knew his face. Enkidu did not hold any position, but he was still respected by everyone in the castle.
At first, he was mistaken for an elf raised by Arthur, because the beauty of his face was beyond the limits of human beings.
But after getting along with him for a while, no one cared about his appearance. Everyone praised the king's friend for treating people like a spring breeze, treating them equally regardless of whether they were high or low, with a true aristocratic demeanor.
Finally, the arrangements for the land were settled. King Arthur began to govern the counties near King's City. The situation was not as difficult as expected. As a natural ruler, no matter how dissatisfied the counties were, when they saw the new king, they were willing to submit, and it did not take long for the unrest to stop.
Arthur appointed his brother Kai as the Minister of Internal Affairs, and announced that he would gather the best Knights in the country to form a legion. Regardless of whether they were commoners or nobles, they could be promoted through military service. This undoubtedly greatly encouraged the younger generation, and the number of people signing up for the legion increased day by day. Later, Arthur had to increase the selection requirements.
Since then, King Arthur's reputation in Great Britain had greatly improved, and his decrees and treaties were much less hindered than when he had just succeeded the throne.
But for the other kings of the surrounding countries, the new king Arthur was a thorn in their side.
They thought that after the death of Uther Of Silla, after a few years of chaos in Great Britain, they would be able to divide the land and property. They did not expect that King Arthur, who had won the throne by pulling out the Sword in the Stone, would appear out of nowhere and govern the country in an orderly manner.
They thought that King Arthur was born lowly and did not deserve to be associated with the kings with noble bloodlines. But Arthur's ability to rule made even the most picky of kings unable to say anything, and could only secretly slander Arthur's unknown birth.
Arthur could not hear the secret discussions of the kings until the next spring, when the routine royal banquet was held as usual. Arthur finished his recent work and attended the royal banquet with his close officials, only then did he notice the strange atmosphere.
The kings who were familiar with each other were enthusiastically discussing recent topics, and no one spoke to Arthur.
Since he was ignored like air, Arthur would not ask for trouble. He raised the wine glass in his hand and recalled the ale he drank in the winter. Now it seemed that the ale was too bitter, and naturally, it was very different from the carefully brewed wine of the royal banquet.
But he still felt that the ale in the village was better.
Ever since he pulled out the Sword in the Stone, his body stopped growing, and it was especially obvious among the unshaven kings. Although he did not receive the king's approval, the queen and noble ladies were much more enthusiastic towards him, and frequently looked at him with sweet eyes.
King Arthur, who had never been in a relationship, felt embarrassed, and his ears turned red. But compared to Enkidu, who was calmly eating fruit beside him, he was much better, because he did not attract the ladies' gazes, but the kings' unfriendly gazes.
Arthur subconsciously blocked those explicit gazes, but his friend did not seem to notice. He only raised his head slightly, and there was berry juice at the corner of his mouth. Without needing Arthur to remind him, he raised his finger and gently wiped the excess juice.
It was indeed a beauty that no one could compare to.
The sharpness bestowed by God and the purity of the weapon complemented each other. Clean and clear, there was an awe-inspiring and inviolable pride. The color of his hair and eyes was quite soft, diluting the sense of aggression and adding an ethereal feeling that did not belong to this world.
Enkidu thought that Arthur cared about the opinions of others, and asked in a low voice.
"Is it okay?"
"I don't care what they think."
It was good to be able to unite, and even if he was rejected, he would not ask for approval. He believed that if his country became strong, he would be able to make allies.
But he was a little worried about the safety of his friend.
Arthur's worry was not without reason. When the banquet ended and the ball started, a graceful king came to invite Enkidu.
"Madam, may I have a dance with you?"
"Sorry, I am a man."
Hearing the answer, the king carefully observed Enkidu's appearance with some hesitation. From the beginning to the end, he did not pay attention to Arthur beside him, and still stubbornly asked.
"Gender is not important to me."
As for whether he believed Enkidu's true gender, that was another matter.
Enkidu considered for a moment and still chose to refuse, not only because he was not good at social dancing, but also because the other party's attitude towards Gozhu was so bad that Enkidu did not want to get too close to him.
There were many kings who looked at Enkidu and noticed the two's behavior. Seeing him leave dejectedly after being rejected, they were secretly delighted. Just as they were about to go up and invite him, King Arthur, who was deliberately ignored, lowered his head and said something to the other party. Enkidu nodded, and the two left the scene of the ball.
Arthur did not intend to dance with the endless stream of ladies who greeted him. He did not want to be too frivolous.
However, dealing with women always made him a little worried. Being surrounded by them did not make him happy, but confused.
Perhaps Merlin was the only one who liked such an occasion.
After discussing with Enkidu, they decided to walk around the castle's back garden. After all, Enkidu's troubles were more serious.
