Just a Lover
Chapter 13
In the end, Lucius decided to stay.
A new life, a new house, a new bed, and a man who was destined to be someone else's husband was sleeping next to her.
Vanessa turned her head and looked at Lucius, who had his eyes closed in the dark. She had compromised in the end because he hadn't done anything.
He had just laid there and rested.
He wasn't actually that energetic. Even if he could maintain his energy during the day, it was still the magic potion that forced him to stay awake. He fell asleep in the evening, exhausted.
When Vanessa finished cleaning up the house and returned to the bedroom, she saw him leaning against her pillow, sleeping with a frown.
He was frowning even when he was asleep. What was bothering him?
She was going to leave the bedroom for him to sleep alone. She walked closer to look at him for a while and wanted to leave, but she didn't.
Lucius pulled her into his arms and buried his head in her neck. His face was pale and his eyes were closed.
"Let me lean on you for a while."
He was really tired, physically and mentally. Vanessa remembered his face in the double-sided mirror before graduation. She had never thought that Lucius Malfoy would have such a haggard moment. He should always be high and mighty, always elegant and noble, always elusive.
So in the end, he had inexplicably become like this.
Vanessa slowly turned her back to Lucius. She looked at the window covered by the light-colored curtains with a heavy heart. She could vaguely see the moon hanging in the sky through the gaps in the curtains.
It was a full moon today.
Everything was silent. She could only hear the man's deep breathing beside her. It seemed that everything in her life was as perfect as the full moon.
To be more precise, it was a moment of perfection.
Since that day, Lucius would sleep in Vanessa's small and shabby place every night.
Even during the day, he would often stay here and not go anywhere.
Vanessa would water the flowers at the door. He would stand on the balcony on the second floor and watch, his hand on the railing, quietly watching.
Even though his eyes were cold and distant, they were filled with a gentleness that was never easily revealed to her.
Lucius had his own pride.
Most of the time, even if he knew what would make her happy and make her like it, he wouldn't do it.
He didn't easily show his gentleness and love. He maintained the most basic dignity in front of Vanessa and didn't try to please her without any bottom line.
He didn't want her to see how much he couldn't live without her. He didn't want her to know that he would lose to a mixed-blood witch who was poor and unbearable in both his ideology and upbringing.
Even though reality had already told him that he had lost long ago, he still didn't know what to do.
At first, Vanessa didn't agree with him staying here every day, but he had plenty of ways to make her compromise.
For example …
"Do you still remember the list of names I mentioned to you?"
After lunch, Lucius was reading the Prophet's daily newspaper. Vanessa looked at him as she packed up. "Yes. What's wrong?" She was a little uneasy. "What did someone do?"
Lucius closed the newspaper and leaned back in the shabby chair. To be honest, everything here didn't match his sparkling aura. He was sitting in the old chair now. Although he didn't say anything, Vanessa felt that it didn't match. She couldn't help but pull out her wand and cast a transformation spell to make the chair look a little more ornate.
Lucius looked down and pursed his lips as if he was trying to hold back a smile. After a while, he said, "No one did anything. Don't worry.
I just want to tell you who put your name and Mrs. Wilson's name on the list. "
Vanessa paused in the middle of packing up. She turned back and stared at the sink. "Can you tell me?
It's not a secret? "
Lucius seemed to think of something. He smiled contemptuously and said lightly, "No."
Vanessa washed her hands and dried them. She walked up to him and looked at him. "Then, who was it?"
Lucius looked up and met her eyes. He paused for a moment and said lightly, "It was Lestrance."
… Lestrange?
The only Lestrange Vanessa knew was her former classmate, Simon Lestrange. He was the pure-blood boy who had written her love letters for six years, no, seven years.
She had a strange expression on her face and didn't speak for a long time. Lucius didn't need her to say anything. He rubbed the silver snake ring on his thumb and said, "Bellatrix Lestrance. She was the young lady of the Black House before she got married. She married Rodolfs and they worked for that lord together.
It is said that she found the draft of a love letter written to you by Rodolfs's younger brother, Simon, in Lestrange's house … "At this point, Lucius snorted coldly and said unhappily," If you can't do it cleanly, don't like someone you can't like. I'm really worried about the future of the Lestrange family if you don't understand this. "
Vanessa was speechless. You should be worried about the future of the Malfoy family. She hinted at him with her eyes.
Lucius coughed lightly and looked away. "So, Bella investigated your identity and was' pleasantly surprised 'to find that you were a suitable target. Putting you on the list not only satisfied the needs of that lord, but also dealt a blow to her husband's younger brother. After all, that younger brother has been competing with Rodolphus for father's attention."
Lucius said casually, "It's that simple. In fact, I've already taken care of it. I'm just here to tell you who caused the trouble. Stay away from that kind of person in the future."
He glanced at Vanessa, as if he was angry that she was attracting bees and butterflies. Vanessa pressed her forehead. She hadn't spoken much to Lestrange at all. It was really an unexpected disaster for her to end up like this.
"How did you deal with it?"
Vanessa didn't want to ask, but she thought that it was necessary for her to know. "I have to know how you dealt with it, in case there are any more mistakes."
Lucius frowned slightly, raised his hand to loosen his tie and said, "You won't meet those people again. I'll stay here to protect you, so you don't need to know how things are dealt with.
Is there anything to eat?
I'm hungry. "
Vanessa was stunned. "You just finished eating, Mr. Malfoy."
Lucius said impatiently, "Do you think I'll make you poor?"
He snapped his fingers, and Jedda suddenly appeared in the living room with a bag of gold coins in her hand. She put it on the table respectfully.
"Master!
Jedda is here with the money! "Jedda bowed deeply, her nose touching the floor.
"You can go now."
Lucius was a born aristocrat. Being born in a family like the Malfoy, he was accustomed to the respect of the house elves and didn't feel that he was arrogant.
After Jedda disappeared, he handed the bag of gold coins to Vanessa. Under her light gaze, he raised his chin slightly and said, "This money is for my living expenses here."
Vanessa raised her eyebrows, picked up the bag and felt the weight of the gold coins. Then she opened the bag, took out a few gold coins from it, and tied it again.
"This is enough."
She returned the rest to Lucius, put away the few gold coins she took out, and went to prepare dessert for him.
With her back to Lucius, Vanessa could guess how he dealt with the Lestrange couple.
Bellatrix, if she remembered correctly, should be Narcissa's sister, who was a few years older than them. As Bella's sister's fiancé, it would be strange if Lucius didn't have that much respect.
Moreover, he was the head of the Malfoy family, and Rodolfs wouldn't be hostile to him because of an unknown mixed-blood witch.
But, how did he explain her identity to them?
Or, he didn't actually show up in person.
Did Narcissa ask for it?
Asking her sister to give her face as a classmate for many years?
Vanessa lowered her eyes and felt a pair of arms hugging her tightly from behind.
She stood there stiffly, silent and motionless.
After a moment, Lucius whispered in her ear, "Turn around, I want you to hug me too."
Vanessa was startled and turned her head to look at his face. Her body turned around as well. He opened his arms and hugged her. She hesitated for a long time, but in the end, she didn't wrap her arms around his waist.
Saint-mango's application was quickly approved.
One morning, Vanessa tidied up her appearance, put on a new dress, and reported to Saint-mango.
She was finally willing to buy herself a new dress to celebrate the beginning of her new life, and to reward herself for fulfilling her original dream.
The entrance to Saint-mango Hospital for Magical Patients was in London's Clear Dip department store, which was an old-fashioned red brick department store. Muggles could only see the "closed for renovation" sign on the door, but they couldn't enter. Wizards, on the other hand, only needed to explain to an ugly doll in front of the window, and the doll would nod its head slightly, wave its connected fingers, and let you in.
Entering Saint-mango was similar to passing through the wall on Platform 9 and 3. Entering Saint-mango, one had to pass through a glass wall. Vanessa looked at the dark glass of the department store, took a deep breath, and stepped through. Immediately, she saw people coming and going.
The scene suddenly opened up, and the light became brighter. Vanessa curiously looked at the patients and healers walking through the hall on the first floor. The latter were wearing Saint-mango's uniform, a dark green robe with the emblem of a wand crossed with a bone. Vanessa thought that she would soon be able to wear that robe, and her mood, which had not been good for the past few days, was lifted again.
She went to the information desk to report her purpose of visit, and someone led her to Saint-mango.
The first floor of Saint-mango was the Equipment Accident Department, mainly responsible for dealing with damage caused by crucibles exploding or wands misfiring. The second floor was the Biological Injury Department, mainly responsible for dealing with damage caused by magical creatures. As for the third and fourth floors, Vanessa looked at the introductions in her hand. They were the Exotic Germs Infection Department, and the Potions and Plant Toxicology Department, respectively. The responsibilities of the departments were the same as the name of the department.
The department Vanessa was going to work in was the Curse Injury Department, which was located on the fifth floor. It was mainly responsible for treating the damage caused by Curses, such as misused Curses, Curses that could not be removed, and … Unforgivable Curses.
When Vanessa followed the guide into the room, there was someone crying and screaming inside. Vanessa was startled, and looked over with a pale face. She saw a male wizard lying on a hospital bed. The only thing she could tell was that he was very young, no more than thirty years old.
"That's Mr. Albert."
The guide, Augustus Pye, was also an intern healer. He was in the Biological Injury Department, and he explained to Vanessa in a low voice, "Mr. Albert is a Muggle wizard. He was attacked a while ago by a Heart-Piercing Curse. The person who cast the Heart-Piercing Curse was very powerful, so …" He regretfully did not finish his sentence, but Vanessa understood what he meant.
Because the wizard who cast the Heart-Piercing Curse was very powerful, the damage caused by the Heart-Piercing Curse was also very serious. The Heart-Piercing Curse was an Unforgivable Curse. Even though Vanessa had never used it, and had never seen anyone being hit by it, she could imagine how painful it must have been.
However, the pain she imagined was not even one-tenth of what Mr. Albert was experiencing.
He struggled and screamed in pain. After the healer in a dark green robe finished reciting all the healing spells, Mr. Albert was slightly relieved, but he was still trembling and unconscious.
"Did it frighten you?"
Augustus saw that Vanessa was pale and silent. He touched his nose and said, "Since you're going to be a healer in the Magical Injury Department, you'll get used to it sooner or later, Miss Wilson."
Vanessa nodded and turned to look at the other patients. They were lying on the hanging beds. Although they were not in as much pain as Mr. Albert, they were all seriously injured.
Augustus introduced them, "They're all Muggle wizards, and …" He glanced at the young woman lying on the bed in the corner and said, "That's Miss Elsa. She's a mixed-blood. Her father married a Muggle, and she doesn't know anything about magic." He whispered, "Those extremists call her and her father Bloodline Betrayers."
He leaned close to Vanessa's ear and said, "Although it's not good to jump to conclusions, I personally think that the attacks on these wizards were all done by that organization, even though the Ministry of Magic doesn't have conclusive evidence yet."
He shrugged and said, "I've read the article that person published in the Daily Prophet. It's very provocative."
As for what organization it was, Augustus didn't say, but normal people could guess.
Vanessa quietly lowered her eyes. Under the guidance of Augustus, she finally completed the entry procedures and received her work card and uniform.
She would officially start work tomorrow, so she could go home for the time being.
After saying goodbye to Augustus, Vanessa went to the store on the sixth floor of Saint-Mango to buy ice cream, and then went home using Transfiguration Phantom.
Surprisingly, as soon as she steadied herself, she saw Lucius who had also just returned. He looked travel-worn and was unbuttoning the collar of his white shirt under his black robe. When he saw her, he said casually, "It seems that the report is over."
Vanessa looked at Lucius with mixed feelings. She couldn't help but recall the patients she saw on the sixth floor of Saint-Mango. She didn't expect the pain they suffered. She knew that Lucius was extreme, and she also knew that he was about to choose some people to attack, so as to establish his position in the magic world as soon as possible. But …
Seeing it with her own eyes and imagining it in her mind were two completely different feelings.
If it weren't for Lucius, she might be lying in Saint-Mango with her mother now, and she wouldn't have the chance to enjoy the peaceful days where she could realize her dreams.
"Mr. Malfoy."
She still called him politely, but the next second, she couldn't help but throw herself into his arms.
He was much taller than her, and his arms were solid and reliable, giving her a great sense of security.
Unexpectedly, he stood there and caught her firmly. He said in an unfriendly tone, "Did someone in Saint-Mango do something?
Tell me his name, I'll make him regret it. "
Hearing his tone, which sounded like a father who indulged his daughter, because he mistakenly thought that she was wronged in the hospital, she pursed her lips sadly and shook her head in his arms. "No, no one did anything. Everyone was very friendly, it's just that …" But what she saw made her clearly realize that it wasn't easy to obtain this peace, and she also understood what kind of harm Lucius had prevented for her. She didn't realize that she needed to repay and be grateful to him, but now she knew that she was wrong.
"Thank you."
She owed him a thank you. From beginning to end, she had never thanked him for this. Lucius stood there and looked down at the girl in his arms, taking in the girl's confusion and nervousness. He slowly raised his hand and patted her back gently. Then he said in a helpless tone, "You're welcome.
Then, can you move away for a moment?
The ice cream in your hand is on me. "
Vanessa immediately moved back and saw that the ice cream she had completely forgotten was all on Lucius's chest. His expensive robe and shirt weren't spared.
Vanessa was dumbfounded. She subconsciously used her hand to help him clean up, and when the cold touch passed to her fingertips, she shivered. Lucius saw that she was obviously frightened and felt a little sorry for her. But he wasn't good at expressing his feelings, and he didn't want to reveal too much about his feelings for her. He was afraid of scaring her even more, and he also had many other concerns.
So he just grabbed her reckless little hand and used it to clean her up silently. Her shirt and robe were restored to their original appearance.
Vanessa slowly came back to her senses and awkwardly stole a glance at his handsome and noble face. Lucius's platinum hair fell to the side of his shoulders without a hair band. His hair was of excellent quality, soft and shiny, making him look unusually handsome.
He was like a gentle light that attracted attention wherever he went. He was different from the rest.
He was different from everyone, and no one could compare to him.
"Don't be afraid."
After cleaning up, he took her hand and said to her, "I'm here. There's nothing to be afraid of."
His expression was serious and his tone was serious. Her gaze swept across his clear skin, his high and firm nose, and finally settled on his slender eyes that despised everything.
He was actually a bad person.
Vanessa knew.
He might have been involved in the harm that Saint-mango and the others had suffered.
But it was also this bad person who saved her and saved her from those hardships.
Lucius Malfoy was a villain. He had no principles, didn't value life, and despised Muggles and all Muggle-born wizards.
In order to maximize his benefits, he was willing to follow that lord and do things that hurt people and broke the law.
Vanessa knew all this, but she really couldn't be afraid of him or hate him for it.
She thought that maybe she and Lockhee weren't completely different. At least they were both selfish.
The world was like this. Vanessa couldn't even protect herself, so she couldn't care less about upholding justice and fairness.
She also couldn't blame Lucius for the harm that a stranger had suffered.
The only thing she could do was to persuade him not to get too close to the center of the conflict, not to hurt too many people, while he was still willing to listen to her.
She was after all a woman, not a hero.
In the end.
